Curl Talk with Tacha J

Hey Beautiful People!   Tacha of here to tell you all about an event Erin (@theesperanzamaria) and I created with you in mind. Before we jump in, let me introduce myself! By day, I work in International Development supporting government-funded projects around the globe. By night, I’m a Beauty and Lifestyle Blogger, creating community, connecting with women, and sharing my thoughts and experiences. The creative freedom blogging gives me is unmatched; I'm able to express my interests and share my personality in a way my full-time job just doesn't allow. And as a result of my blogging endeavors, Curl Talk DC was born. It all started with feeling a little left out of the booming NYC natural hair community. Erin and I wanted in on the fun and were determined to bring that same dynamic to the DC area! The idea was simple, actually: every girls night inevitably leads to hair talk. After a few glasses of wine you'll find us raving over holy grail hair products, sharing tips, per... MORE

Hair care with Bonnie + Faroukjames

Hey readers! My name is Bonnie and I'm the lucky mama to Faroukjames, whom you may know from Instagram. He's the one with the long and beautiful curls. Farouk is not my only child though, I have two others who are indeed not children any more, in fact they are parents themselves now!   I became a mother at a very young age, having three unplanned children from my childhood sweetheart by the age of 19. Farouk was my only planned child and there is a fifteen year age gap between Lucas and Farouk ( my two youngest boys).  People often assume I wanted another girl ( based upon Farouk's long curls) but that's not true, we wished for a boy. It was to be Farouk senior's first son, so excited were we on the day of the scan, hoping for the news of a boy. However, we were then shocked to only be told "Sorry, we cannot see the sex, only that this baby has heaps of hair!"  photo by @tabzwilson Luckily, I was prepared. My elder children are mixed (half Jamaican), so I already knew how to... MORE

Building a Confident Girl with Tamara South

Being a girl in this world can be difficult. There is so much influence telling you that you don’t look right the way you are. While confidence-building begins at home, the world around us has influence on the way we think about ourselves. I can attest to feeling like a fish out of water. I wanted to stand out but the risk of being made fun of by my peers led me to opt for blending in with the crowd instead. I had a low self-esteem not because of what was going on at home, but because of my peers. With a 4c hair type, wearing it out was not the “in-thing”. I wore a perm which helped stripped me of my identity. It actually wasn’t until I stopped getting perms that my confidence started to come back. Growing up, I dreaded wash days. My hair was full of tangles and my grandmother would use a brush to get through my wet 4c hair( a natural hair disaster). Fast forwarding to the present, I’m so grateful for the natural hair community of women who have taught me how to love and not just... MORE

Spreading the Love

In the media, amongst our timelines, and in many of the most popular YouTube channels, we see a number of natural haired ladies being represented these days, which is amazing! However, it’s much more often that we see looser (type 3 if you’re into categorizing) patterned hair textures than the tighter coils of our type 4 sisters and brothers.   There are plenty of beautiful type 4 hair bloggers and enthusiasts out there and we want to help share the love.   Check out Bubs Bee. She’s a fabulous beauty enthusiast with a head full of lovely hair. She has an array of helpful videos demonstrating how she cares for and styles her type 4 hair.  @_bubsbee     There’s also LaToya Diana. She’s proudly a 4c natural dedicated to creating videos and blog content to help provide styling options for other girls with a similar hair texture.   @latoya_diana     Abigail, or Ab K, has a lot to share as well. In her very own words, she’s all about, “showing and sending out love to all my... MORE

What You Need to Know About Our Cleansing Co-Wash

First things first. What exactly is a Co-Wash?  Believe it or not, this is still one of the most frequently asked questions we receive. So for anyone wondering just that,  co-wash is a conditioner that also cleanses your hair and is used in the place of shampoo. It is gentler than even most sulfate-free shampoos, and eliminates the traditional 2-step wash routine. Simply cleanse with the co-wash, detangle, then rinse. You can then jump right into styling, but we always suggest deep conditioning as well. That’s one step that should remain a staple  in your routine. Many curly girls opt for co-wash over shampoo because curls need to hold on to as much moisture as possible, and shampoos can be unnecessarily drying. Co-washes are also perfect for cleansing hair mid-week or between washes when product starts to build-up. It provides a way to remove residue while also conditioning the hair. Now that you know what a co-wash is, here’s what you need to know about ours: Key Ingre... MORE
