Let's Celebrate! - A Note from Jasmine Lawrence

This year marks the 14th anniversary of the founding of EDEN BodyWorks. I’m immensely proud of the impact the team has made and continue to be optimistic about the future that lies ahead. Now that I’ve spent more than half my life at the helm of this organization, I’d like to share some thoughts on the journey thus far, where we’re going, and what keeps us moving.        Looking Back Some of you may be familiar with the story, but for those who aren’t, I founded EDEN BodyWorks as a teenager after facing my own challenges with managing my natural hair and understanding my value beyond my looks. I had two goals in mind when I set out to start my own company. First, I wanted to share the natural products I created and healthy hair tips I had learned through research with women around the world. Second, I wanted to encourage, support and empower people to pursue their best, happiest, healthiest lives regardless of what challenges they faced. What started with a hair oil made in my kitc... 28 Afros with Ziajah Nellom

My name is Ziajah Nellom of cupofZ.com and I’m the creator of 28 Afros, a month-long series dedicated to recreating iconic afros in celebration of Black History Month.    About 28 Afros   There’s no doubt that the afro hairstyle is multidimensional. Through the 28 Afros series, my goal was to showcase how intricate and versatile the hairstyle can be. I wanted to highlight shrinkage as well as stretched-to-full-capacity hair. I also wanted to display shapes and how the texture of an afro changes daily. It amazes me that we, as a people, still have such a hard time with something as simple as hair. Whether it be at home or in the workplace, it can be challenging for some people to feel comfortable wearing their hair in its natural state. When describing natural hair, I use words like intricate and multidimensional as a term of endearment, however, these same terms are used as synonyms for words like complex and difficult which are used in a derogatory manner. I believe that people ... MORE

Why I Write and Why You Should Too with @OliviaHancock_

At the start of a new year it's only natural that we seek out ways to improve ourselves. One of the best ways to begin this journey is by taking measures to figure out what makes you happy. What do you like to do? How do you express yourself? Do you have an outlet?  This week, student and writer, Olivia Hancock, is sharing with us a bit about what it is she likes to do, and how it can help you too! photo by @bbranmarie I’ve been passionately writing ever since I learned how to spell and could hold a pencil in my hand. During my elementary and middle school years, you could constantly find me drafting short stories about any and everything. Writing is a part of who I am and my passion for the pen has led me to want to pursue a career in journalism. Though I’m still a college student, I’m constantly working on fine-tuning my skills and finding opportunities to help me fulfill my ultimate journalist dreams. To date, my writing has already taken me on a journey that has allowed me to... MORE

Mental Health + the Holidays

It's officially the holiday season, with Thanksgiving only a day away! When Eden BodyWorks reached out to me to write a piece on mental health and the holidays, I jumped at the opportunity.  A little background, I have a Master of Arts in Counseling; Marriage and Family Therapy to be exact. I’ve worked in the Mental Health field for going on six years. I currently work as a school-based therapist with kids ages 5-17 who struggle with a host of mental health concerns such as Anxiety, ASD, ADHD, and Depression to name a few. I also have some experience working with Adults who struggle with SPMI (Serious and Persistent Mental Illness). Holidays as most of you know can bring so much joy into our lives; it's a time to celebrate traditions, connect with family, friends and loved ones. Holidays, can also be a time of immense stress for others.  It can come with huge financial expectations or obligations; some people face loss of a job, loss of loved ones, anniversary of the death of a ... Hair care with Bonnie + Faroukjames

Hey readers! My name is Bonnie and I'm the lucky mama to Faroukjames, whom you may know from Instagram. He's the one with the long and beautiful curls. Farouk is not my only child though, I have two others who are indeed not children any more, in fact they are parents themselves now!   I became a mother at a very young age, having three unplanned children from my childhood sweetheart by the age of 19. Farouk was my only planned child and there is a fifteen year age gap between Lucas and Farouk ( my two youngest boys).  People often assume I wanted another girl ( based upon Farouk's long curls) but that's not true, we wished for a boy. It was to be Farouk senior's first son, so excited were we on the day of the scan, hoping for the news of a boy. However, we were then shocked to only be told "Sorry, we cannot see the sex, only that this baby has heaps of hair!"  photo by @tabzwilson Luckily, I was prepared. My elder children are mixed (half Jamaican), so I already knew how to... MORE

Building a Confident Girl with Tamara South

Being a girl in this world can be difficult. There is so much influence telling you that you don’t look right the way you are. While confidence-building begins at home, the world around us has influence on the way we think about ourselves. I can attest to feeling like a fish out of water. I wanted to stand out but the risk of being made fun of by my peers led me to opt for blending in with the crowd instead. I had a low self-esteem not because of what was going on at home, but because of my peers. With a 4c hair type, wearing it out was not the “in-thing”. I wore a perm which helped stripped me of my identity. It actually wasn’t until I stopped getting perms that my confidence started to come back. Growing up, I dreaded wash days. My hair was full of tangles and my grandmother would use a brush to get through my wet 4c hair( a natural hair disaster). Fast forwarding to the present, I’m so grateful for the natural hair community of women who have taught me how to love and not just... MORE

Living Authentically with Britt Null

Last month I was blessed to celebrate another birthday.  Turning 31 wasn’t exactly a milestone birthday in the traditional sense but considering some recent life changes, it was a milestone for me. Thoughts about what the past 31 years of my life have been raced through my mind, and while contemplating, one word surfaced; authenticity.  Authenticity can be defined as “being true to one’s own personality , spirit or character”.  As I grappled with this word and the definition, several questions swarmed in my head. Have I lived an authentic life the past 31 years? Have I been true to my own personality, spirit and character? While soul searching I was hit with a couple major epiphanies. The first was that I had spent a large portion of my existence living bits and pieces of authenticity, but not fully. The second was the realization that I was constantly seeking experiences to fulfill this “authentic” self I so desperately needed to be. Whether it was through friendships, travelin... MORE

Spreading the Love

In the media, amongst our timelines, and in many of the most popular YouTube channels, we see a number of natural haired ladies being represented these days, which is amazing! However, it’s much more often that we see looser (type 3 if you’re into categorizing) patterned hair textures than the tighter coils of our type 4 sisters and brothers.   There are plenty of beautiful type 4 hair bloggers and enthusiasts out there and we want to help share the love.   Check out Bubs Bee. She’s a fabulous beauty enthusiast with a head full of lovely hair. She has an array of helpful videos demonstrating how she cares for and styles her type 4 hair.  @_bubsbee     There’s also LaToya Diana. She’s proudly a 4c natural dedicated to creating videos and blog content to help provide styling options for other girls with a similar hair texture.   @latoya_diana     Abigail, or Ab K, has a lot to share as well. In her very own words, she’s all about, “showing and sending out love to all my... MORE

To Straighten or Not to Straighten

The natural hair community is a beautiful space for learning about and celebrating the hair you were born with. However, within this space, there’s a history of debates on different viewpoints pertaining to hair care. With the weather about to change, some ladies are preparing to get their flat irons ready, which is a major no-no to other naturals.  @glamtwinz334   Take Kelsey and Kendra Murrell for example, also known as Glamtwinz334 on YouTube. These ladies are known for switching up their texture from curly to straight and back multiple times throughout a year, and they do so fabulously. However, on social media and sometimes even in the comments of their videos they experience negativity towards their decision to heat style so frequently. They spoke on this in their latest “Glamtwinz Hair Journey” video. Other naturals sometimes try to police them, saying they aren’t truly natural or that they don’t really love their natural hair texture - all because they choose to heat... MORE
